For the 12th Provincial Council Election in the 8th Nationwide Local Elections held on June 1, 2022, out of 1,803,096 eligible voters from 8 cities and 7 counties, 1,013,560 (56.2%) casted ballots. Out of 89 candidates, 48 council members were elected (including 5 proportional representatives) and on July 1, 2022, the 12th Chungcheongnam-do Provincial Council opened.

For the 5th Chungcheongnam-do Council Election, the first election to simultaneously elect the heads of local governments and local council members, held on June 27, 1995, 910,465 (71.7%) out of a total of 1,270,138 voters from 10 counties and 5 cities participated, electing 61 members (including 4 proportional representatives) out of 165 candidates. The 5th Chungcheongnam-do Council was opened on July 11, 1995.

Local councils that were dissolved because of the May 16 military coup d'état, were restored by opening city and county councils on April 14, 1991 and holding the 4th Chungcheongnam-do Council Election across 5 cities and 15 counties on June 20 of the same year. 813,730 (68.9%) out of a total of 1,180,314 voters participated, electing 55 members out of 184 candidates (1:3.3). A historical council opening ceremony was held on July 8 with every city and county council members present at the council chamber.

The 3rd Chungcheongnam-do Council Opens

The rule of the Liberal Party government came to an end because of the April 19 Revolution and the First Republic was replaced by the Democratic Party-led Second Republic of South Korea. On December 12, 1960, the 3rd Chungcheongnam-do Council Election was held. 781,935 (68.8%)out of a total of 1,137,184 voters participated, electing 48 members out of 188 candidates (1:3.9). Ki-sae Lee was elected as the governor on the first gubernatorial election held on December 29 of the same year. However, the 3rd Chungcheongnam-do Council was closed in just 6 months because of the May 16 military coup d'état in 1961.
